Passionate Hirer Awards 2014 Winners
The Passionate Hirer Awards were presented during the first part of the Executive Hire Party. A shortlist of eight hirers were nominated from 700 depots throughout the UK and Ireland that members of the Show Team visited in the lead-up to the exhibition.
Following 'mystery shopper' visits and calls to their depots, Finalists were scrutinised under a broad range of criteria including: presentation and functionality of premises; staff enthusiasm and competence; efficiency in handling orders; quality of products and delivery vehicles; and innovation in offering a wide range of equipment and exploring new opportunities.
The quality of the companies' printed promotional materials and website was also assessed, along with feedback from customers, suppliers, neighbours and competitors.
The Winner in the Small to Medium Hire Centre category, achieving 57.7 points out of a possible 70, was Phils Tool Hire of Welshpool, which serves customers over a large and mainly rural area across central Wales and the English/Welsh border. The Judges commented that the company “shows an outstanding level of service that is much appreciated by its customers. It has risen to the challenge of providing first class products across a challenging geographic area. The commitment of the owner-led team is highly commended.”
Phil and Rosemary Nickless received their Award from Matthew Hill of sponsor, Obart Pumps.
Achieving 61.3 points, the Winner in the Large Hire 'Super Centre' category was Traction Equipment (Stafford). The Judges said that, “Traction Equipment has a comprehensive range of equipment that, in addition to a good range of portable tools, general plant and access equipment includes many less well known specialist machines, including extremely low ground pressure transporters. The company is highly regarded by its customers and commands a high level of industry respect. It regularly responds to callouts for emergency situations, while the friendly and professional attitude of the staff sets a benchmark for our industry.”

This year, a Special Award was presented to Hewden Hire's Avonmouth 'hub' depot, which was also Runner-up in the Large Hire 'Super Centre' category with 60.8 points. The citation commented, “This modern approach to the hire, transport and service of large construction plant and powered access platforms goes back to the basics of good plant hire. There is no doubt that Hewden will duplicate this 'hub' operation at other regional locations. The Judges allowed for the slightly different profile and methods of operation that are necessary for such an activity but the core values of service, commitment and passion for hire remain paramount.”
The other Small to Medium Category finalists were Akro Multihire of Livingston, Paul Yates Tool Hire of Knaresborough, and Will Hire in Stourbridge. The two additional nominees in the Large Hire 'Super Centre' category were Drogheda Hire of County Louth, and Fairfax Tool Hire in Selby.
Hewden's Ben Darnley (left) and Garnon Thornton (right) are presented with their Award by EHN's Robert Aplin.
During the ceremony, Kubota (UK) was announced as the Winner of the Exhibitor Excellence Award, presented to the exhibitor that worked most pro-actively with the Show organising team before and after build-up, and produced an imaginative display.
Rebecca Bryson receives Kubota's Award from the Show Team's Ali Rogers and Tim Smith of Brandon Hire.
In addition, Aristospray (UK) was presented with the Innovation Trail Award for its Strata MP016 plaster sprayer, selected from ten Finalists, for demonstrating quality, sustainability and 'hireability'.
